How does the brain encode 3-dimensional visual information for stereoscopic perception? Mikko Juusola’s lab at the University of Sheffield is seeking a Research Associate to study this question in the fruit fly Drosophila.

We study stereovision using a range of methods, such as in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology, fly genetics, behavioural experiments and computational modelling, often engineering custom equipment to suit our needs. You will design, develop and perform experiments and data analysis to elucidate neural circuitry and the functional logic underlying depth perception in the Drosophila brain, with the aim of applying these findings to robotics. This work will also entail writing papers and presenting your findings at conferences and seminars. This research project, in collaboration with Professor Barbara Webb’s laboratory at the University of Edinburgh, will be undertaken at the University of Sheffield.

We seek self-motivated, innovative and creative candidates with expertise in at least some of the above techniques, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a team. We encourage applications from diverse academic backgrounds.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
