Our Service Designers
Design services that have user needs at their core
Understanding user behaviour and feedback is key. You'll translating user need into actionable tasks, and communicate & collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on world-class solutions.
Use Critical thinking
Your focus on the details helps you collate and analyse research and insights data.
Work closely with researchers
You'll conduct research studies, deploying qualitative and quantitative methods to effectively outline and review user needs.
Articulate the vision for products and services
You lead workshops, communicate goals and drive actionable outcomes, working with product owners and policy colleagues to define the customer journey.
Build an open and collaborative culture
In DWP and the design community you share best practices, effective ways of working and create an open discussion. You help grow our capability and promote service design.
Own and create high quality service design deliverables
Personas, experience maps, insights packs, user flow maps, and service blueprints.
What skills, knowledge and experience are essential for this role? We'll assess these when we look at your application
You'll be based in your choice of one of our brilliant digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield, whichever is most convenient for you.
We also have all the tools and tech to work flexibly. We operate a hybrid working model, with some time at home and some time in a hub,
We offer competitive pay of up to £66,058 per annum.
You'll be eligible for a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.9%.
You'll get a generous leave package starting at 26 days, rising to 31 over time.
Plus, all the usual bank holidays, and the option to take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi leave.

What skills, knowledge and experience are essential for this role? We'll assess these when we look at your application
- Have substantial experience of using hands-on service design approaches to solve complex problems.
- Demonstrate user-centred design expertise to develop end-to-end, front-to-back services using Government principles and evidence that meet citizen and colleague needs as well as department objectives.
- Be comfortable influencing and communicating to a range of colleagues and stakeholders at varying levels of seniority on the value of user centricity, your approaches and decisions.
- Contribute to and support the creation and maintenance of a positive working environment that enables collaboration within your team, the wider department and the service design community.
