Purpose of Role
The role of the Assistant Caretaker is to support the daily operations of the school, ensuring that it remains a well-maintained, safe, and secure environment for all users, thereby enhancing the experience for visitors, students, and staff.
The role includes providing on-site support in meeting key contractual obligations, delivering a timely and effective service to the school community—including staff, pupils, external partners, and community users—by responding to both reactive and planned activities. This ensures compliance with contractual requirements and supports commercial efficiency.
The post holder should possess a broad range of practical skills, along with sound operational knowledge and experience in Facilities Management (FM), Service Delivery Plans, and school environments. All duties must be carried out in full compliance with current Health and Safety regulations and VF Codes of Practice.
Job Description
In this role, you will be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks and procedures, and may also be required to initiate tasks within defined parameters. The Assistant caretaker will demonstrate the ability to develop a sound understanding of the relevant area of work or study and to perform a range of tasks with limited supervision or guidance.
Responsibilities
Security
- General building security
- Key holder responsibilities
Maintenance Activities
- Carrying out day-to-day reactive tasks
- Liaison with subcontractors
- Performing routine system checks (e.g. water hygiene, fire systems)
Health & Safety
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety policies
- Reporting any unsafe conditions or activities
- Grounds Maintenance
- Litter picking and leaf clearance
- Snow clearance and gritting during adverse weather
Cleaning
- Window cleaning
- Emptying bins
- Receiving and distributing deliveries
- Room setups for exams and school events
Administration
- Keeping records up to date
- Accurate completion of timesheets
