Harvey Nash

University of Sheffield | 1-2 days per week on-site | Russell Group University | Permanent

Harvey Nash have partnered exclusively with the University of Sheffield as they continue to revolutionise their digital solutions and cement their standing as one of the UK’s leading Russell Group institutions.

The university is now looking for a hands-on DevOps Team Lead to shape and manage a growing team of engineers. This is a pivotal hire within the DevOps and Integration function, offering you a blend of strategic oversight, technical challenge, and meaningful leadership.

The university has invested significantly in its digital estate, with key infrastructure already migrated into AWS and wider initiatives around automation, cost optimisation, and resilient system design underway. This role will sit at the heart of that transformation.

The Opportunity:

You’ll be leading a team currently made up of 4 engineers, with plans to grow gradually over the next couple of years. This role isn’t just about people management - it’s a technical leadership position with real influence. Roughly 60/40 in split, or slightly more technical depending on projects, you’ll be driving standards, tooling, and delivery practices across hybrid platforms and a mixed cloud/on-prem environment.

With plenty of big-ticket transformations underway from optimising critical services running across campus data centres, to evolving a complex AWS-hosted student system. There's also new work spinning up around cost-efficient data handling (e.g. S3 transitions), integration support, and modernisation of existing platforms.

Experience of Interest:

Strong experience with AWS, VMWare and infrastructure-as-code tooling(Terraform)

Solid grounding in LAMP stack and resilient web services hosting

Knowledge of Jenkins, GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD pipelines

Previous exposure to hybrid environments – both on-premise and cloud

Comfortable supporting legacy services while steering cloud-first direction

Able to balance hands-on technical input with mentoring and team leadership

A genuine interest in shaping a team culture and helping engineers grow

What’s in it for you?

41 days of holiday per year (including bank holidays)

Outstanding 21% employer pension contribution

Flexible hybrid model with 1-2 days on-site each week in Sheffield

A collaborative, forward-thinking environment with peer support across Dev, DevOps and Integration teams

Support for professional development and technical progression

A rare opportunity to lead while remaining technical - perfect for someone stepping up.

This is a role for someone who wants to shape the future of digital infrastructure in higher education - while still getting their hands on the tools.
