The Chief Engineer embodies the pinnacle of technical authority, responsible for establishing and upholding the highest engineering standards, processes, and governance. This involves providing overarching technical leadership to engineering teams, ensuring rigorous application of design codes and safety arguments across all projects, and acting as the final technical reviewer and assurer of complex outputs. Beyond day-to-day project involvement, the Chief Engineer drives strategic technical direction, manages organisational technical risks, and champions continuous improvement and professional development for all engineers, ultimately safeguarding the technical integrity and reputation of the entire enterprise.
Requirements Of The Chief Engineer
Provide technical guidance to engineering teams with deep expertise in structural and mechanical engineering with an appreciation of drives, motors, bearings, wheels.
Proficient in reviewing engineering drawings for manufacturability, applying design for manufacture principles, and ensuring governance and compliance as a technical reviewer.
Experienced in highly regulated environments, including risk assessments, safety arguments, limit state design, and Eurocode (especially Eurocode 3).
Capable of integrating mechanical, electrical, and control systems, along with defining, verifying, and validating requirements.
A degree is expected; Chartered Engineer status is highly preferred, or an HNC/HND with extensive relevant career experience.
While crane experience is ideal, strong transferable experience from moving structures (like bridges), large moving equipment, or other heavy engineering sectors is highly valued.
