DB2 for z/OS Systems Programmer
Location: Sheffield, UK (3 days onsite / 2 days remote)
Contract Type: Long-term Contract
We are seeking an experienced DB2 for z/OS Systems Programmer to join a global Mainframe Support team responsible for managing large-scale DB2 subsystems across multiple Mainframe environments and geographies.
This role will focus on the administration, performance, integrity, security, and ongoing support of enterprise DB2 for z/OS environments supporting critical business applications. You will work closely with infrastructure, operations, and application teams to ensure high availability, resilience, and optimal performance across complex OLTP and distributed database platforms.
The successful candidate will play a key role in both BAU support and strategic platform initiatives, contributing to the stability and evolution of a mission-critical Mainframe database estate.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and support DB2 for z/OS environments across enterprise Mainframe platforms.
- Monitor and optimise DB2 subsystem performance to ensure high availability and fast response times.
- Install, maintain, upgrade, and test new DB2 releases and related tooling.
- Provide 2nd and 3rd line production support for DB2-related incidents and issues.
- Manage database backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and data protection processes.
- Support highly responsive OLTP DB2 environments integrated with CICS applications.
- Perform capacity planning and storage management activities.
- Ensure database security, integrity, compliance, and recoverability standards are maintained.
- Support and manage distributed DB2 connectivity and integrations.
- Collaborate with technical, application, and operational teams globally to support delivery and operational objectives.
- Troubleshoot performance and application-related database issues.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong experience as a DB2 for z/OS Systems Programmer or DB2 Systems Specialist.
- Extensive hands-on experience supporting enterprise DB2 production environments.
- Strong knowledge of:
- DB2 for z/OS administration
- DB2 software maintenance and upgrades
- DB2 performance tuning and optimisation
- Backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes
- Distributed DB2 connectivity
- Experience supporting high-volume OLTP/CICS environments.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Good understanding of database security and governance practices.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working within enterprise support and operational environments.
Desirable Skills
- Programming or scripting experience with:
- REXX
- COBOL
- Knowledge of Mainframe performance and monitoring tools.
- Understanding of GDPR and information security legislation.
- Experience working within global enterprise or banking environments.
- Exposure to automation and operational improvement initiatives.
