Role Description
The Program Manager, Architecture Portfolio is responsible for establishing, managing, and driving the delivery of the Architecture Portfolio within the CTO organisation. The role provides leadership, governance, and execution oversight across a portfolio of architecture initiatives, ensuring alignment to HSBC's technology strategy, transformation objectives, and enterprise architecture standards.
This position requires exceptional programme leadership, strategic planning, stakeholder management, and the ability to coordinate multiple interdependent initiatives across a global, matrixed organisation. The successful candidate will work closely with senior architects, engineering leaders, and business stakeholders to deliver measurable outcomes that support technology modernisation, simplification, resilience, and strategic change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage the Architecture Portfolio framework, including governance, planning, prioritisation, reporting, and delivery oversight.
  • Lead the end-to-end coordination of architecture programmes and initiatives, ensuring alignment with CTO strategy, enterprise architecture roadmaps, and business priorities.
  • Partner with Chief Architects, Domain Architects, Engineering leaders, Product Owners, and Business stakeholders to translate strategic architecture objectives into executable delivery plans.
  • Manage portfolio-level dependencies, risks, issues, assumptions, and decisions across architecture workstreams and technology domains.
  • Drive effective portfolio governance, including steering committees, investment tracking, executive reporting, and portfolio reviews.
  • Develop and maintain portfolio roadmaps, milestones, resource plans, delivery schedules, and progress reporting for senior leadership.
  • Ensure architecture initiatives remain aligned to strategic outcomes, regulatory requirements, technology standards, and organisational priorities.
  • Coordinate funding, budget tracking, resource demand management, and investment reporting across the architecture portfolio.
  • Facilitate collaboration across Architecture, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Service Management, Infrastructure, and Business teams to remove delivery barriers and drive successful outcomes.
  • Support the definition and implementation of portfolio management processes, controls, metrics, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Provide clear and concise reporting to senior stakeholders, including CTO leadership, Architecture leadership teams, and programme governance forums.
  • Ensure all activities comply with HSBC governance, risk management, and control requirements.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience leading large-scale programmes or portfolios within technology, architecture, or enterprise transformation environments.
  • Strong understanding of Enterprise Architecture, Technology Strategy, Architecture Governance, and technology transformation delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and managing portfolio governance frameworks, roadmaps, and executive reporting structures.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence senior leaders across Architecture, Engineering, and Business functions.
  • Experience managing complex dependencies across multiple programmes, workstreams, and global teams.
  • Strong risk, issue, financial, and resource management capabilities.
  • Experience operating within large-scale financial services organisations or similarly complex enterprise environments.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills, with experience engaging executive-level stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of portfolio management methodologies and delivery frameworks, including Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid delivery models.
  • Experience driving organisational change and strategic technology transformation initiatives.

Desirable

  • Experience working within CTO, Enterprise Architecture, or Strategy functions.
  • Familiarity with architecture frameworks such as TOGAF and enterprise governance practices.
  • Experience supporting technology simplification, cloud transformation, platform modernisation, or strategic architecture programmes.
  • Relevant programme or portfolio management certifications (MSP, PgMP, PRINCE2, PMP, Agile certifications).

Key Success Measures

  • Successful establishment and operation of the Architecture Portfolio governance model.
  • Delivery of architecture initiatives in line with agreed strategic outcomes, timelines, and investment objectives.
  • Clear visibility of portfolio health, risks, dependencies, and value delivery for senior leadership.
  • Improved alignment between architecture strategy, engineering execution, and business priorities.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and decision-making across the architecture community and broader CTO organisation.

This is a strategic programme leadership role focused on enabling and governing the Architecture Portfolio, rather than hands-on technical project delivery. It will suit an experienced Programme Manager with a strong background in enterprise-scale technology transformation, portfolio governance, and architecture-led change.
