Role Title: Cyber Platform Engineer (Python, Cloud, DevOps, Terraform, Cyber Security)
Location: SheffieldRate - £550 - £650 - Inside IR35


Role Description:
We're looking for a strong Software Engineer to join the Cyber Security Strategic Engineering team. You will primarily design, develop and maintain backend services, APIs, developer tooling and automation that support HSBC's cyber data platform and security engineering capabilities. This role is aimed at engineers with a strong software development background who enjoy building production-grade systems and are comfortable operating those systems in cloud environments using DevOps and SRE practices. This is not a traditional infrastructure-focused DevOps or Platform Engineering position.
Key responsibilities:

Software Engineering (Primary Focus):

• Design, build, test and maintain backend services, APIs and engineering tools.
• Develop production-quality software using Go, Python, Java or C#.
• Apply software engineering best practices including SOLID principles, design patterns,
  refactoring and code reviews.
• Build scalable, maintainable and testable services.
• Write automated unit, integration and behavioural tests.
• Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to engineering standards.

Platform & Cloud Engineering:

• Deploy and support services on AWS or Azure.
• Use Terraform and Infrastructure as Code to automate platform provisioning.
• Work with cloud networking concepts and secure service integrations.
• Support engineering platforms used by Cyber Security and Data Engineering teams.

DevOps & SRE Practices:

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines.
• Implement monitoring, alerting and observability.
• Troubleshoot production issues and participate in operational support.
• Continuously improve reliability, security and service performance.

Essential Skills:

• Strong software engineering background with significant hands-on coding experience.
• Demonstrable experience developing production systems in Go, Python, Java or C#.
• Experience building APIs, microservices and backend services.
• Strong understanding of software design principles, architecture and engineering best practices.
• Experience with automated testing (TDD, BDD, unit and integration testing).
• Cloud experience in AWS or Azure.
• Exposure to Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and operational support.

Candidate Profile:
Ideal candidates will have a software engineering background first, with cloud, DevOps and SRE capabilities as complementary skills. Candidates whose experience is predominantly infrastructure, DevOps or platform engineering with limited software development experience are unlikely to be suitable.
