Futures are supporting a specialist engineering business in Sheffield in their search for a Systems Engineer. This is a varied technical role focused on the design, integration and delivery of automated test and process control systems for demanding engineering applications.

The successful Systems Engineer will have a strong electrical and electronic engineering background and will be comfortable looking at systems as a whole, from understanding a customer's test requirements through to defining the electrical architecture, selecting appropriate test and measurement equipment, supporting manufacture and helping to debug and commission the completed system.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical or Electronic Engineer who enjoys working across the complete project lifecycle and wants to develop broader systems engineering experience within automated test equipment, instrumentation and control systems.

Systems Engineer – Role & Responsibilities – ATE / Electronics / Electrical / Test Systems / Controls

• Develop and deliver electrical and electronic systems for automated test equipment and process control applications
• Work with customers to understand what needs to be measured, controlled and tested within their application
• Translate customer and technical requirements into practical system designs and specifications
• Define electrical architectures and develop circuits and system-level solutions
• Select suitable test, measurement and instrumentation equipment for each application
• Consider signal integrity, grounding, shielding and other important electrical design principles
• Produce electrical schematics and system drawings using EPLAN or similar eCAD software
• Participate in customer technical and design review meetings
• Work closely with electrical, electronic and software engineers throughout project delivery
• Hand completed designs over to production and provide technical support during manufacture
• Answer engineering queries and support design changes arising during the build phase
• Assist with system integration, testing and fault finding
• Support system debugging during test and validation
• Assist with commissioning of completed systems
• Produce and maintain technical documentation, specifications and project records
• Support the introduction and evaluation of new test, measurement and automation technologies

Systems Engineer – Skills & Experience – ATE / Electronics / Electrical / Test Systems / Controls

• Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Communications, Control Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline
• Previous experience delivering systems for test, automation, controls or a related engineering environment
• Strong understanding of electrical and electronic systems
• Experience using electrical CAD software, with EPLAN particularly advantageous
• Experience working with test and measurement equipment
• Knowledge of National Instruments equipment would be particularly relevant, although experience with Beckhoff, Keysight or similar systems would also be suitable
• Good understanding of instrumentation and measurement principles
• Awareness of signal integrity, grounding and shielding within electrical and electronic systems
• Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Comfortable understanding customer requirements and translating them into engineering solutions
• Able to communicate effectively with customers and internal engineering teams
• Willingness to support systems through manufacture, integration, testing and commissioning

The successful Systems Engineer will be based from the company's Sheffield office and will remain closely involved with projects as they move from design into manufacture, integration and testing. This is not a role where you simply produce a specification and hand it over to somebody else. You will have the opportunity to follow systems throughout the full engineering lifecycle, working with customers at the requirements stage, developing the design, supporting production during the build and helping resolve technical issues during system testing and commissioning. The role therefore requires someone who is comfortable moving between detailed electrical and electronic engineering and the broader system-level considerations that determine whether the finished equipment performs correctly.
