Design Engineer - Precast Concrete - #2154501

We are looking for a Design Engineer, to design, develop, and support the manufacture of precast concrete products, with a focus on pre-stressed concrete bearers and rail infrastructure components. The Design Engineer will provide technical expertise throughout product development, manufacturing implementation, and continuous improvement activities while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and customer requirements. Ensure bearer layout designs are correct and verified in time to meet production program requirements, considering any late detail received from the customer.

JOB RELATED STATISTICS:

1. Key interface within the design department and offer design advice and guidance to customers, the Laboratory and management for rail bearers produced at the Sheffield factory to satisfy requirements.
2. Responsible for design and development of precast concrete products.
3. Supports production, quality, and project teams.
4. Manages technical documentation and engineering change requirements.
5. Be the first point of contact for the customer with any bearer related technical enquiries.
6. Plan all production within time of concrete delivery reviewing product range to meet demand.
7. Create all cast sheets for the production team and review based on availability and requirements.
8. Provision of high quality, accurate work to established drawing, technical or engineering standards
9. Use and assist in the development of emerging design tools and software
10. Provide support to manufacturing operations to aid engineering compliance issues arising through NCRs or process change.
11. Understanding of rail concrete products, processes and capabilities to ensure drawings and other supporting information are in-line with capabilities.
12. Plan within the WIP file the annual forecast.
13. Review the Network Rail planning system (NROL) for all bearer requirements.                                                                                                                          

JOB DUTIES:
Design & Development

Produce engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications for precast products.

Design precast concrete and pre-stressed concrete products.

Support product development and validation activities.

Check all nonstandard drawings and ensure they meet concrete standards.

Capture all data from approved and if required nonapproved 1:50 drawings.

Produce all PRS data from approved 1:50s for all production avenues.

Raise Request For Information (RFIs) to customers when drawing errors are found (internal and external)

Technical Support

Ensuring all technical designs supplied by customer are fully compliant with engineering requirements and are within Progress Rail’s production capability so as to minimise Progress Rail’s exposure to risk.

Provide engineering support to manufacturing operations.

Investigate product and process-related technical issues relating to design and planning.

Support commissioning of manufacturing equipment and processes.

Support in the implementation of advanced software development.

Support both the operational and technical leadership in bearer design and NCR investigations.

Production Planning

Programming orders to meet constantly changing customer demand while maintaining the optimum levels of production through production planning and scheduling.

Ensure projects are planned over a 12-month period and maintain the forecast plan.

Maintain all relevant planning documents.

Ensure that linear metre volume is planned to meet the available capacity.

Produce daily cast sheets and maintain all bearer requirement spreadsheets.

Review the daily reject reports and plan all recasting.

Documentation

Prepare and maintain engineering documentation.

Control drawing revisions and technical records.

Ensure document control systems are in place and maintained.

Produce all daily documentation required and ensure its retention.

Continuous Improvement

Have a proactive approach to H&S improvement through innovation and action.

Identify opportunities to enhance product design and manufacturing efficiency.

Support value engineering and cost reduction initiatives.

Be willing to drive change and attend any innovation training.

Project Support and New Product Development.

Assist in the researching & development of new applications and products using innovative concepts.

Participate in project planning and implementation activities.

Liaise with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.

• Experience in engineering design specifically relating to prestressed concrete bearers.
• Ability to interpret standards, drawings, and technical specifications.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in CAD and structural analysis software.

Desirable

• Experience designing precast concrete products.
• Experience with pre-stressed concrete structures or rail infrastructure products.
• Knowledge of relevant Network Rail and London Underground Standards and designs.
