Position : Rolling Mill Design Engineer

IMPORTANT : this role comes with a comprehensive development programme as part of long term succession planning. Previous experience of rolling mills is not essential, and the role should be viewed as a Junior or Trainee level position to start. It is envisaged that the first 2-3 years will see you shadowing a Senior Engineer whilst learning the detailed requirements of the design of rolling mill passes

Location : South Yorkshire based with national and international travel as required. Projects can have durations of over 12 months, and values upwards of £100 million each. Customer locations are both UK and Internationally based, and the roll will require travel to these locations. Travel will probably be about 20% of the role, but may involve periods of time away from home for up to 4 weeks at a time, especially at the start and commissioning phases of projects.

Salary : £30,000 - £40,000. This will increase over time as skills and experience develop

Working for a specialist consultancy, you will take your existing knowledge of mechanical engineering, metals, metallurgy, manufacturing coupled with first class mathematical and analytical abilities and undergo a structured training and development programme to make you a true expert in hot metal rolling mill processes.

About You :

• Masters or PhD Qualified in a relevant subject. Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics or very similar. We may also consider Graduates who have a 1st Class Honours Degree in a similar subject and who want to develop a career outside of academia
• Experience of, or an interest in metals manufacturing, hot metal working (foundry, forge, rolling mills etc) is extremely beneficial
• Industrial experience is beneficial, either directly working in industry or in an industry affiliated university environment
• Understanding of mechanical engineering principles is essential. The role is technically demanding
• Experience of manufacturing processes, and industrial technologies is beneficial
• Basic knowledge of metallurgy and metal forming processes, particularly for ferrous alloys would be great
• Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (especially Word and Excel)
• Programming knowledge in Visual Basic, C#, Python, or another object-oriented programming language
• Willing to travel both domestically and internationally
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills - this role is extremely detail focused
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• High level of accountability, commitment, and results orientation
• Passion for innovation, digitalisation, and continuous improvement

Aspects of rolling mill production that you will develop skills in will include

• Deformation System: Dictates total reduction, per-pass reduction, and elongation factors based on volume constancy.
• Rolling Speed System: Manages speed matching and material flow from stand to stand to prevent tension or compression cobbles.
• Temperature System: Monitoring interpass thermal states (deformation heat heavily influences subsequent roll force)
• Gradual Distribution: Spreading rolling forces across multiple stands, applying higher reductions in roughing stands and lighter drafts in finishing stands.
• Permissible Angle of Bite: Ensuring rolls can properly grip the incoming material without slippage.
• Sequence Validation: Accounting for thermal and mechanical interactions simultaneously to avoid compounding errors
