The Stroke Medicine / Neurology post has arisen as a result of an expansion in emergency services delivered by the Neuroscience department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The post is to commence in August 2022 for 12 months with a possibility of extension. As this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’ and will not qualify for a National Training number (NTN), full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. Duties of the post are equivalent to FY3/CT level.



The appointee will be responsible in his/her duties to acute stroke and general neurology physicians.

The Neurological Department lies within the Directorate of Clinical Neurosciences of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) NHS Trust (based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital).



The Department provides a clinical service to North Trent and South Yorkshire serving a population of 2.2 million. Clinics are held in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Lincoln, Chesterfield, Barnsley, Worksop and Bakewell.



At the Royal Hallamshire Hospital there are 51 Neurological beds. There is also access to appropriate ITU facilities and clinical neurophysiology, neuropathology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology (including magnetic resonance imaging) and neuropsychology.



The University Department of Neurology is also situated in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the newly developed state of the art research facility SiTRAN. The Academic Director, Dame Professor Shaw has an interest in motor neurone disease.



Teaching of Sheffield undergraduate and postgraduate students takes place within the department



  • To provide day to day clinical care to stroke patients in the hyper acute unites or the general neurology inpatients on the two Neurology wards .

  • To take part in daily ward rounds

  • To assist with the TIA clinics and the triage of newly admitted patients

  • To supervise and support the junior ward residents assigned to the HASU and general neurology teams

  • To undertake any specific clinical and related responsibilities delegated to him/her by the Senior resident doctors and Consultant Physicians

  • To teach junior doctors, undergraduate medical students, nursing and other para-clinical staff where appropriate

  • To record relevant clinical details and maintain accurate case notes for patients admitted under the care of his/her firm. To summarise the clinical findings on presentation of all emergency patients admitted when on-call.

  • To prepare discharge summaries at the time of discharge.

  • To deal with clinical correspondence in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • A suitable qualified individual may have the opportunity to join neurology on call specialist registrar rota but this is not the requirement of the post.
